NEWBERRY, S.C. --- 14th-ranked Newberry College beat Tusculum University 23-5 in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse Saturday night at Setzler Field.
The Wolves (11-4, 7-2 SAC) scored the first 10 goals of the game and outshot the Pioneers (7-6, 2-6 SAC) by a 55-25 margin. Liam Vollans led the Newberry offense with three goals and six assists, with 15 different players scoring at least one goal in the victory.
Aidan Villano had a goal and an assist for the Pioneers, with a goal apiece from Zach Afalla, Preston Stewart, Tysen Fontenla and Drew DiMondo, whose fourth-quarter tally was the first goal of his Pioneer career.
Newberry led 6-0 after one quarter and held a 10-0 lead until Fontenla scored a man-up goal with 1:38 left in the first half. Newberry led 11-1 at halftime and 18-1 after three quarters before the Pioneers broke loose for four goals in the final period.
The Wolves had 55 ground balls as a team, led by seven from Colby Rogers who was 19-for-24 on faceoffs. Ryan Morrison had eight ground balls and eight caused turnovers for the Wolves, who were 25-for-27 on clears and 22-for-32 on faceoffs.
Aiden Paczek had three caused turnovers for the Pioneers to set the program single-season record with 26 caused turnovers, breaking the mark of 24 set in 2021 by Connor Coleman. Jackson Cardey paced the Pioneers with five ground balls and Blake Harrison added four.
Newberry went 3-for-5 with the man advantage while Tusculum was 1-for-5 with the extra man. The Pioneers were 21-for-24 on clear attempts but turned the ball over 24 times as a team.
Garrett Smith played the first three quarters in goal for the Pioneers and finished with 16 saves, with Ryan McKeown making two saves in the fourth quarter. Newberry used five goalies in the match, who combined for 11 saves led by eight fron starter Ben McMullen.
Tusculum will finish the regular season on Wednesday, April 22 beginning at 7 p.m. at Emory & Henry. The Wasps are 1-12 overall and 0-8 in SAC play after a 32-4 setback at Anderson on Saturday.
