Pioneers head West for ranked matchups

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's volleyball team is trekking to the Pacific Time Zone for the weekend, competing in a trio of matches over a two-day span (Mar. 18-19). Hosted by Grand Canyon, the Pioneers will face the No. 9 Lopes twice before wrapping up against the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks, who are 12th in the NAIA.

RECAPPING THE WEEK
Tusculum (5-12) lost both of its matches over the week, falling in straight-sets to King before taking a set off of the seventh-ranked team in the NAIA, Indiana Tech.

Colby Landry tallied 20 kills over the two contests, including a career-best 12 against the Warriors. Deklan Wingo added 17 on a .419 hitting clip, just ahead of Jake Whyte's 16. Shaphar Grant notched six kills on a .556 clip, while Taylor West registered a career-high six in an outside hitter role in the latter match. Shaun Kampshoff dished out 63 assists, an average of exactly nine per set. Landry was the lone Pioneer to land multiple service aces (2) and double-digit digs (11) on the week. Ross Miller was just short with nine digs, ahead of Kampshoff's eight. Wingo was credited with six total blocks (two solo, four assists) to lead the team.

On the season, Whyte leads the offense with 174 kills, while Landry follows with 111. Loup and Grant are close behind with 105 and 101 kills, respectively. Kampshoff has handed out 514 assists and landed 35 service aces. Five Pioneers have at least 65 digs on the season: Kampshoff (75), Whyte (72), Landry (69), Loup (67), and Taylor West (65). Grant has tallied 44 blocks (12 solo, 32 assists), ahead of Wingo's 40 (seven solo, 33 assists).

Nationally, Tusculum ranks 19th in aces per set (1.46) and 19th in opponent hitting percentage at .230. Individually, Kampshoff is sixth in aces per set (.574) and Whyte is 24th in attacks per set (7.72).

LOOKING AHEAD
Grand Canyon (11-8), ranked ninth in the latest poll, swept Harvard over the weekend, each in three sets. The Lopes have two players with over 200 kills: Camden Gianni (254) and Christian Janke (210). Both are also hitting over .300, Gianni at .306 and Janke at .384. Nicholas Slight is the setter, averaging just over nine assists per set, for a total of 520. Gianni is also the leader behind the service line, landing 33 aces, 10 ahead of Hugo Fischer. Cole Udall has recorded 159 digs, followed by 105 from Gianni. Four Lopes are credited with over 30 total blocks: Colin Lovejoy (40), Fischer (37), Jacob Guerber (35), and Gianni (32).

Benedictine (10-5) is ranked 12th in the most recent NAIA poll and will face a pair of local teams before matching up with the Pioneers at Grand Canyon. Caleb Stearman has collected 102 kills, ahead of Charles Pollnow with 99 on a .288 hitting rate. Daxton Tolman has tallied 425 assists, a shade over nine per frame, and leads the Redhawks with 30 aces. Pollnow has dug up 56 attempts to head up the defensive category, while John Dawson is credited with 34 total blocks (five solo, 29 assists) at the net.
