WISE, Va. --- UVA Wise nearly lost a 3-0 lead before holding off Tusculum University for a 4-2 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis Tuesday afternoon at the Humphreys Tennis Complex.
The Cavaliers (10-6, 4-2 SAC) needed a third-set tiebreaker win from Andreea Onitoiu at flight two to take the victory from the Pioneers (6-8, 0-5 SAC), as the other match still in progress was tied 4-4 in the third set.
UVA Wise took two of the three doubles matches to go up 1-0 in the match, with Ginevra Moreno Villa and Jimena Rivera Camacho earning a 6-4 win over Onitoiu and Juliana Bastidas at flight two for the Pioneers.
The Cavaliers went up 3-0 as Melissa Lion Airoldi beat Sophia Amyes 6-0, 6-0 at flight six and Lucy Cunliffe took a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rivera at flight five. Tusculum got on the board at flight one, as Ylva Frafjord Landa won 6-3, 6-2 over Kenzy Abdelaal, and the Pioneers pulled within 3-2 when Moreno beat Constanca Azinhaga 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at flight three.
At flight two, Onitoui bounced back from a loss in a set two tiebreaker to Emma Kotzmannova by winning the third set in a tiebreaker for a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-2) victory. In the unfinished match at flight four, Carla Guasch was even 4-4 in the third set with Bastidas when Onitoui clinched the win for UVA Wise.
The Pioneers host Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, March 28, with the Bears coming into the match at 7-0 in conference play following a 4-0 win over Coker on Tuesday.
