GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Anderson University defeated Tusculum University 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The 31st-ranked Trojans (10-1, 2-1 SAC) led the match 3-0 before the Pioneers (6-3, 0-1 SAC) picked up a pair of wins in singles to close to within 3-2. However, Anderson picked up a three-set win to clinch the victory and end Tusculum's five-match winning streak.
In doubles, Alexandria Braithwaite and Ensley Collins defeated Ginevra Moreno Villa and Jimena Rivera Camacho 6-1 at flight three, and Gigi Sompayrac teamed with Kate Johnson for a 6-2 win at flight two over Carla Guasch and Sophia Amyes to give Anderson a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, Mara Opre beat Rivera 6-2, 6-0 at flight five and Westlyn Morris defeated Amyes 6-1, 6-2 at flight six to push the Trojans' lead to 3-0. Tusculum picked up its first win at flight one when Ylva Frafjord Landa earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Braithwaite, and Moreno defeated Elena Ronconi 6-2, 6-3 at flight three to bring the Pioneers within 3-2. However, Sompayrac rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Emma Kotzmannova at flight two to give the Trojans the victory.
The Pioneers will play their second straight ranked opponent on Saturday when Tusculum visits 19th-ranked Newberry, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Oakland Tennis Center.
