Pioneers defeat King 5-2 for third straight win

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team won its third match in a row on Wednesday with a 5-2 victory over King University in non-conference action.

The Pioneers (4-2) won the doubles point and all four singles matches played to the duration against the Tornado (3-4).

In doubles, Tusculum had a clean sweep as Jimena Rivera Camacho and Ginevra Moreno Villa teamed up for a 6-3 win over Lily Belcher and Shellby Tranchita at flight three, and Sophia Amyes and Carla Guasch defeated Ruth Robison and Sarah Hale 6-3 at flight two. At flight one, Ylva Frafjord Landa and Emma Kotzmannova went to a tiebreaker before claiming a 7-6 (7-2) victory over Deniz Aytun and Rani Malhoe.

King was awarded a point at flight six by default to open singles, but the Pioneers went up 3-1 as Amyes beat Hale 6-2, 6-1 at flight five and Rivera downed Robison 6-1, 6-0 at flight four. Aytun beat Landa via retirement at flight one to cut the Tusculum lead to 3-2, but Kotzmannova took a 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 win over Malhoe at flight two and Moreno defeated Tranchita 6-1, 6-3 at flight three to wrap up the victory for the Pioneers.

Tusculum will play its long-awaited home opener on Saturday, Feb. 28 against West Virginia State beginning at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The Yellow Jackets (0-4) have played once this spring, a 5-1 loss to UVA Wise on Feb. 8.
