Tusculum College's Erin Mills has been named Co-Freshman of the
Year as the South Atlantic Conference unveiled its Women's tennis
All-Conference teams and awards on Wednesday.
Mills shares the award with Liz Renteria of Catawba after posting a
14-4 record in singles and a 15-3 mark in doubles for the Pioneers,
who will carry a 16-3 record and the number-two seed into this
week's Food Lion SAC Tournament at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
She is the fifth Tusculum player to earn Freshman of the Year
honors, and the first since Danae Valderrama capped a run of four
straight Pioneers to capture the award in 2004.
Mills played at flight three singles for most of the season for the
Pioneers, and compiled an 8-1 record against conference opponents.
The three-time SAC Player of the Week posted all 14 of her singles
wins in straight sets, including a stretch of seven straight
victories that will be on the line in the SAC Tournament.
In doubles, the Duluth, Ga. native teamed with senior Taylor
Patterson and has dominated since settling into the number-two spot
in the lineup. Mills and Patterson are 14-0 at flight two as a
tandem after two losses at flight one earlier in the season. The
pairing has won 13 consecutive contests, including three of the
last six by shutout.
The Pioneers will play either third-seeded Anderson or sixth-seeded
Lincoln Memorial in a SAC semifinal match on Friday at 1 p.m.
