Tusculum College parlayed a sweep of doubles action into a 7-2
victory over Newberry College in a South Atlantic Conference
Women's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis
Complex.
The Pioneers (14-3, 6-1 SAC) earned three straight-set singles wins
in the victory over the Wolves (12-9, 5-4 SAC), solidifying their
grasp on second place in the conference standings with two league
matches remaining.
In doubles, Kate Hutchinson and Megan Buckmaster teamed for an 8-6
win at flight one over Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum. At flight
two, Taylor Patterson and Erin Mills won their 11th straight match
and improved to 12-2 overall with an 8-0 sweep of Tara Lamers and
Ariel Strong, while at flight three the duo of Emily Waters and
Amanda Sumner posted their ninth consecutive victory with a 9-7 win
over Marina ziehe and Shannon McManus.
The Wolves trimmed the margin to 4-2 in singles by winning two of
the first three matches behind Aguirre at flight one and Adum at
flight two. Mills gave the Pioneers a point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at
flight three over Strong.
From there, the Pioneers closed out the match with three
consecutive wins. Waters defeated Ziehe 6-1, 6-4 at flight four,
Buckmaster downed Lamers 6-4, 6-4 at flight five and Sumner rallied
for a 0-6, 7-6, (10-7) win over McManus at flight six.
Tusculum remains home on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Brevard in
a SAC matchup at 3 p.m. from the Nichols Tennis Complex.
