The Tusculum College Women's tennis team remained unbeaten in
spring competition with a 9-0 South Atlantic Conference victory
over Catawba College Sunday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis
Complex.
The Pioneers (11-1, 2-0 SAC) have won all 10 of their matches since
resuming play on Feb. 17, including five via shutout. The Indians
dropped to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in the SAC with the loss.
The start of the match was delayed almost an hour due to wet courts
following a morning shower, and another shower delayed action
midway through singles play. By that point, the Pioneers already
owned an insurmountable 6-0 lead and they closed out the match with
three more wins after the delay.
In doubles play, Holly Verner and Katelyn Doss defeated Sloan
Kessler and Maggie McKee 8-4 at flight one, Courtney Conley and
Taylor Patterson shut out Ally Prior and Olivia Myers 8-0 at flight
two, and Kate Hutchinson teamed with Megan Buckmaster for an 8-1
victory at flight three over Candace Hall and Hannah Kovach.
With their wins, Verner and Doss along with Conley and Patterson
each improved to 9-1 this season. Conley and Patterson extended
their winning streak to nine straight matches.
In singles play, Verner moved to 10-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Kessler at flight one, Doss downed Prior 6-3, 4-0 (retired) at
flight two, and Conley defeated McKee 6-1, 6-2 at flight three for
her 10th straight win and an 11-1 overall record.
At flight four, Patterson boosted her record to 10-2 by defeating
Hall 6-1, 6-0, Hutchinson moved to 9-0 overall with a 6-2, 6-2 win
over Myers at flight five, and Buckmaster posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory
over Kovach at flight six.
The Pioneers will square off with defending SAC champion Wingate
Monday beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The
Bulldogs are 10-3 overall and bring a 3-0 SAC record into Monday's
contest.
