HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- The Tusculum doubles duo of Taylor Patterson and Courtney Conley recorded the deciding point at the No. 1 flight to lead the Pioneers to 5-4 win over Bloomsburg Wednesday morning in women's tennis action.
The match was a close contest as four of the six singles matches went three sets. The match was tied 3-3 following singles play, which was played first on Wednesday. Bloomsburg's Michelle Perez opened with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Conley at No. 1 singles, but Tusculum's Blake Thompson answered with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the fifth flight over Kristi Twardziak.
The next four singles matches would go the distance as Tusculum's Megan Buckmaster and Katie Hillis would capture points at the third and sixth flights, while Bloomsburg's Emily Palko and Sarah Fisher garnered three-set wins for the Huskies (5-3).
The No. 3 duo of Thompson and Buckmaster won their match over Fisher and Nicole Slagle, 8-4 in pro sets. BU's Twardziak and Danielle Walsh captured a point at No. 2 doubles, 8-5 to level the match.
Patterson and Conley closed out the match with the fifth and match-clinching point with a 9-7 win over Palko and Perez at the No. 1 flight.
The Pioneers (7-3) went 2-1 during its Spring Break trip and have won three of its last four matches. Tusculum returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, March 18 at Wingate for a 2 p.m. match.
