BREVARD, N.C. --- Blake Thompson clinched the deciding point with her straight set win at No. 6 singles as Tusculum College defeated host Brevard College 5-4 Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. With the victory, the Pioneers (14-3, 7-0) clinch at least a share of the SAC Championship. It is Tusculum's fourth league title and first since 2004.

The loss also snaps Brevard's 10-match winning streak as the Tornados fall to 14-4 overall and 5-3 in the SAC.

The Pioneers won two of the three doubles points, including a 9-7 pro set win by Jennifer Sparks and Amanda Pike, over the BC duo of Kayley Duval and Lindsay Hostetter. Heidi von der Lage and Jessi Smith tallied a point at No. 3 doubles in an 8-2 win over Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas.

Shaeffer tied the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sparks at No. 1 singles. Tusculum regained the lead with Katelyn Doss's default win over Hostetter. TC captured its fourth point of the afternoon with von der Lage's 6-0, 6-0 win over Jennifer Nyman at No. 5 singles and a 4-3 TC lead. Thompson clinched the win and a share of the SAC crown with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Douglas.

Tusculum has won or shared the SAC Championship in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008.

Tusculum returns to action on Sunday as the Pioneers travel to Lees-McRae College for a 1 p.m. match. It will be TC's third match in as many days.
