GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's soccer team will look to build on the momentum of back-to-back victories as the Pioneers play a pair of road matches this week.
The Pioneers (2-5-0, 2-1-0 South Atlantic Conference) visit rival Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and travel to Anderson for a Saturday evening match with the Trojans starting at 5 p.m.
Tusculum is coming off wins over Mars Hill (2-0) last Sunday and Coker (3-1) on Saturday, scoring three times in the second half to erase an early 1-0 deficit. With those wins, the Pioneers have vaulted into a four-way tie for third place in the SAC with Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman.
RECAPPING THE WEEK
The Pioneers' lone match last week was a 3-1 win at Coker on Saturday, behind second-half goals from Bailey Bylotas, Myah Giordullo and Yvette Raaijen, the latter on a penalty kick. Emma Harriman made one save to earn credit for the victory, as Tusculum outshot Coker 19-6 to send the Cobras to their 31st straight conference loss.
Coker led 1-0 after four minutes, but Bylotas got the equalizer in the 53rd minute, followed by the go-ahead goal from Giordullo in the 63rd minute and a penalty kick from Raaijen in the 72nd minute.
PROFILING THE PIONEERS
Bylotas has scored in back-to-back games for the Pioneers, while Raaijen and Giordullo each scored their first goals of the season in the Coker win. Raaijen's penalty-kick goal was her sixth without a miss in her career, while Giordullo's goal was the first of her career for the freshman.
Bylotas is second on the team in goals, shot attempts (12) and shots on goals (eight), trailing senior Kenzie Ellenburg who continues to lead the squad in goals (three), shot attempts (21) and shots on goal (12).
Harriman, who has started four straight matches in goal, is fifth in the SAC in total saves with 22. She has a 1.33 goals against average and a .765 save percentage in conference matches, with an overall goals against average of 2.70.
As a team, the Pioneers rank seventh in the SAC in goals per game (1.14) and are third in corner kicks with 36.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Carson-Newman (3-2-2, 2-1-0 SAC) suffered its most lopsided loss since 2012 on Saturday when visiting Catawba claimed a 7-0 victory. The loss came after the Eagles opened their SAC schedule with shutout wins over Mars Hill (2-0) and Wingate (1-0).
Freshman Nellie Bryneus leads the Eagles with three goals and an assist in six matches, followed by junior Addie Henry with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Lilly Ebner has started all seven matches in goal and has a 1.57 goals against average and a .676 save percentage.
The Eagles swept the Pioneers in two meetings during the spring season, including a 3-2 overtime decision in Jefferson City. Three straight wins by the Eagles over the Pioneers have given Carson-Newman a slim 20-19-2 edge in the all-time series.
Anderson (2-4-1, 0-2-1 SAC) dropped its second straight conference game on Saturday with a 2-1 home loss to Lenoir-Rhyne. All three goals were scored in the opening 33 minutes, with two tallies from the Bears answered by Haley Sink at 32:10. However, the Trojans did not put a shot on goal in the second half. Anderson hosts Queens on Wednesday, with Saturday's match with Tusculum their fourth straight home contest.
Six different players have scored the six goals for Anderson so far this season, with the lone assist coming from senior Havon Ashy to give her a team-best three points. Keeper Jeanette Campbell has been busy in goal for the Trojans, making a SAC-best 56 saves while ranking eighth with a 1.45 goals against average.
The Trojans are winless in their last five meetings with the Pioneers (0-3-2). Tusculum won the last meeting 1-0 at home in 2019, with Anderson's last victory coming in 2015 as the Pioneers hold a 7-4-4 advantage in the series.
