GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Emily Cowan scored the
game-winning goal with just 14 seconds remaining in the second
overtime to give Anderson University a 2-1 victory over Tusculum
College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action from
Pioneer Field on Saturday afternoon. Taylor Lewis scored her fifth
goal of the season for the Pioneers (3-5-1, 0-3-1 in the
SAC).
In the 46th minute, Gabrielle Whitt corralled an Olivia
Kilgore corner kick from 20 yards from the goal. She flipped the
ball backwards over her head to Carly Mill, who knocked the ball to
Lewis who shot the ball past Trojan goalkeeper Abby Helm. Whitt and
Mill each were credited with assists on the goal.
Anderson (7-1-0, 3-1-0) was first on the board with a goal
from Mariana Poveda in the 30th minute. Poveda created space for
herself with a move to shake the Pioneer defender. She then fired a
shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced into the back
of the net.
In the waning seconds of the final overtime period, the
Trojans broke out on a counter following a Pioneer corner kick.
Cowan received the pass from Idoia Agirre and she laced a perfect
shot from 17 yards out past the outstretched arms of TC goalkeeper
Miriah Martin into the upper right corner.
Lewis led the Pioneers with three shots with two on frame.
Courtney Hackney and Carlie Thornber each had two shots with one on
goal, while Mill had three. Martin made seven saves in the losing
effort.
Anderson out-shot TC 18-14 led by six from Agirre, including
three on frame. Poveda and Marie Yasmine Alidou had three apiece
and Kenzie Van Huesen had two. Helm was credited with four
saves.
The Trojans' Ali Palacios was whistled for a handball in the
box off a pass from Katja Andersson and the Pioneers were awarded a
penalty kick in the ninth minute. Kelli McCalla stepped in to take
it but fired the shot high over the corssbar and the score remained
tied at 0-0. Following Poveda's goal, the Pioneers were only able
to muster one shot before the halftime whistle sounded.
After Tusculum quickly tied the match at 1-1 after the break,
Martin saved two shots and the Pioneer defense blocked three Trojan
attempts before the match headed to overtime. It was the
second-straight match with extra time for Tusculum following last
Wednesday's contest against Lincoln Memorial.
Hackney nailed a shot five minutes into the first overtime but
Helm was able to make the save. TC's defense didn't allow the
Trojans to get a shot on goal in the first extra session. Martin
made a save early in the second overtime on an attempt by Van
Heusen. However, TC wasn't able to get a shot in the final frame
before the Trojans ended the match with just seconds
remaining.
The Pioneers will return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 3 when
they travel to face Newberry College. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
