BRISTOL, Tenn. --- Tusculum College scored a
pair of goals in the opening 13 minutes of the match to defeat King
University 4-0 in women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon in
Bristol, Tennessee. The Pioneers (1-2) were forced to sit through a
90 minute lighting delay following halftime before earning their
first win of the 2015 season.
Courtney Hackney opened the scoring in the 10th minute on an
assist from Taylor Lewis. It was the Mason, Ohio native's first
goal of the season as the Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Just
three minutes later, Lewis collected a cross from Carly Mill in the
middle of the box and put the ball past King (1-1-1) goalkeeper
Olivia Drake. Mill was credited with the assist on Lewis' first
goal of the season as the Pioneers took a quick 2-0
advantage.
TC had more chances in the first half including three corner
kicks by Olivia Kilgore within a minute and a shot by Payton DeHart
that was saved by Drake. However, the Pioneers took their 2-0 lead
into the half. Following the break, a bevy of lightning strikes lit
up the sky over the playing field forcing the game to be delayed
for an hour and a half.
Following the delay, Carlie Thornber added to the Pioneer lead
with her first goal of the season in the 50th minute to push
Tusculum's lead to 3-0. Thornber collected a rebound from a cross
that was punched away by Drake and fired a shot from 18 yards
out.
In the 84th minute, Emma MacDonald scored her first goal as a
Pioneer which increased Tusculum's lead to 4-0. The freshman from
Whitby, Ontario, Canada stole the ball off of a King defender and
beat Drake for the score.
TC goalkeeper Miriah Martin (1-2) earned the win in net with
her first shutout of the season. Martin made five saves and
defended one Tornado corner kick en route to the victory.
Lewis finished with a match-high five shots with three on
frame. Thornber and Mill each registered three shots, while
MacDonald and Hackney had two. Overall, the Pioneers out-shot the
Tornado 29-7 and had nine corner kicks compared to just one by
King.
Keely Easterling registered two shots on goal for the Tornadao
while Catherine Walsh also had two shots, but weren't on frame.
Miranda Smith and Walsh each had the best scoring chances for King
but neither were able to find the back of the net. KU's Kendyl
Baird was issued a yellow card in the 76th minute.
Tusculum will be back in action on Friday in its home opener
at Pioneer Field against Union University at 7 p.m.
