Box score
WINGATE, N.C. --- The Tusculum College women's soccer team was defeated by Wingate University 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Wingate, N.C. Jade Montgomery scored the game-winner for the Bulldogs in the 84th minute.

It was TC's first South Atlantic Conference loss of the season and it makes the overall record 5-3-1 (2-1 SAC). Senior goalkeeper Marissa Williams made six saves in the match despite taking the loss.

Wingate (3-2-2, 3-1) outshot Tusculum 16-4 and held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Pioneers' Taylor Lewis, Shannele Sunderland, Gabrielle Whitt, and Jenique Thombs all registered one shot each.

With the score knotted at 0-0 late in the match, Montgomery received the ball from about 30 yards from the TC goal. She then made a nice move to shake Pioneer defender Carlie Thornber, and launched a beautiful shot from just outside the 18 yard line into the top left corner of the goal past the outstretched arm of Williams.

After a barrage of early shots from the Bulldogs, the Pioneers took their first shot of the game off the foot of Thombs in the 22nd minute, but it resulted in the first of three saves by WU goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie. TC's Sunderland was issued a yellow card in the 24th minute after a hard foul.

In the second half, Whitt launched a shot in the 72nd minute and Sunderland got a shot off in the 76th minute but Hardie made the save on both attempts. Following the Wingate goal, the Bulldog bench and Thornber were issued yellow cards in the 84th minute.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday night (Oct. 1) when they travel to Banner Elk, N.C., to play Lees-McRae College. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
