Newberry takes 14-6 victory over Pioneers

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Newberry College defeated Tusculum University 14-6 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field.

Shannon Creagh had five goals and three assists and Ella Todd had a goal and five assists for the Wolves (9-8, 6-4 SAC), who outshot the Pioneers (8-8, 4-5 SAC) by a 44-28 margin and had just seven turnovers in the game.

Sophia Didzbalis scored twice for the Pioneers, with a goal apiece from Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg, Mya Halladay, Carmella Nilsson and Reese Remaly, along with two assists from Kayla Nuccio.

A 7-0 run in the second quarter gave the Wolves a 10-2 lead at halftime, but the Pioneers shut out Newberry in the third quarter to pull within 10-5. However, the Wolves would score four goals in five minutes to start the fourth quarter and pull away.

Carolin-Vandenberg had a team-high three ground balls for the Pioneers, while Remaly had four draw controls. Sofia Rositano had two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls for the Pioneers. Creagh also led Newberry with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, with three ground balls from Jadie Burns.

Newberry had a 26-14 edge in ground balls over Tusculum, while the Pioneers had a 13-9 advantage on draw controls. The Wolves were 16-for-18 on clears with the Pioneers going 11-for-17 as a team.

Emery Dove made her first start of the season in goal for the Pioneers and had seven saves in the first half, with Emily White making 10 saves in the second half. Presley Green had 14 saves in goal for the Wolves.

The Pioneers will close the regular season on Wednesday, April 22 at Emory & Henry, beginning at 4 p.m. The Wasps dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the SAC with a 22-5 loss at Anderson on Saturday.
