GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Regis University scored nine consecutive goals in the first half as the 19th-ranked Rangers defeated Tusculum College 19-7 in non-conference Women's lacrosse action Monday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Erin Todd finished with three goals and two assists for the Rangers (3-0), while Emily Elkins had three goals and an assist and Hilary Duda tallied three times for Regis, which led 11-3 at halftime before pulling away at the end by scoring six of the final seven goals.
Kelsey Crow and Cheyenne Bray scored two goals apiece for the Pioneers (4-1), while Rachel Holmes had a goal and an assist and Madison Malone added two assists. Tusculum was outshot 37-16 by Regis in the game, and committed 21 turnovers to 13 by the Rangers.
Duda scored the first goal of the match just 53 seconds into the first half for a 1-0 Regis lead, but Brooke Hardy came back just over two minutes later for the Pioneers to tie the score at 1-1. The Rangers would then score the next nine goals over a span of 16 1/2 minutes, including three from Elkins, to go on top 10-1 with 5:33 left in the half.
The Pioneers netted two of the final three goals of the half on tallies from Holmes and Crow to trim the margin to 11-3 at intermission. Goals from Bray, Rachel Del Duca and Crow helped the Pioneers pull within 13-6 with 21:57 remaining in the game, but the Rangers scored six of the final seven goals. A goal from Bray with 8:31 left would cap the scoring for the Pioneers.
Malone led the Pioneers with five draw controls and three caused turnovers along with three ground balls, while Del Duca, Calyn Kelly and Coneisha Waugh had two ground balls apiece for the Pioneers. Melissa Hastie had five draw controls and three ground balls to lead the Rangers, with Jada Bonner adding three caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls.
Brooke Wagner started in goal for the Pioneers and played a total of 31 minutes in three separate stints in goal, making a total of five saves. Kaitlin Winnie had four saves in 26 minutes for the Pioneers, while Kaele Lawless had one stop in just over three minutes of playing time. For Regis, Kenley Harrington had four saves in 52 minutes and Hope Correia added one stop in eight scoreless minutes to end the game.
The Pioneers' next scheduled match on Wednesday at the University of the Cumberlands has been canceled, resulting in their next match being on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brevard in the opener of South Atlantic Conference play.
