Cunningham, Tomassoni shoot 73 to open Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. --- Tusculum University's Olivia Cunningham and Katie Tomassoni each carded rounds of 73 and are both tied for seventh place after opening round of the 2019 Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate Monday.  The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at the 5,958-yard, par-72 Golf Club at South Hampton.

The Pioneers finished the day with team score of 314 and are ninth in the 12-team field but are just four shots out of being in the top-four.

Lynn University leads the team competition after posting 298 and leads by seven strokes over Wingate and Carson-Newman who carded scores of 305.  Newberry, Coker and host Lincoln Memorial are tied for fourth place with 310.  Queens University of Charlotte is seventh with 311, followed by North Greenville (313), Tusculum (314), Belmont Abbey (315), Southern Wesleyan (334) and Barton (336).

Cunningham had a steady round opening with five straight pars before a bogey on the sixth hole.  She closed out her opening nine with back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes to shoot a one-under par 35.  She followed with four straight pars before consecutive bogeys on No. 14 and No. 15. But ended the day with three pars to shoot a one-over 73.

Tomassoni jumped out of the gate on fire with back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes and finished her outward nine with 35 (-1).  She would post bogeys on No. 14 and No. 17 but tallied seven pars on the back-nine to card 73 and climb into the top-seven on the leaderboard.

Cunningham and Tomassoni are just three shots out of the lead currently held by the trio of Rachel Watts (Carson-Newman), Warissa Puangcharoen (Wingate) and Savannah Hallman (North Greenville) as the are locked in a three-way for first place at two-under par 70.

Tusculum rookie Julia Johannson battled through a tough opening nine carding a 43.  But birdies on the 11th and 15th holes helped paced her way to a 38 on the inward nine to shoot 81 and is currently tied for 35th place.

Lauryn Moon shot 87 and Jacque Butler posted an 88 as the Tusculum freshmen duo is tied for 55th and 58th, respectively.

The final round will be held on Tuesday at The Golf Club of South Hampton.
