CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's track and field teams competed Friday on the opening day of the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University.
The Tusculum women are in 10th place in the team standings after seven of 19 events, while the Pioneer men did not score on Friday but advanced three runners to the finals of the 100 meters. Tusculum also moved three women into finals of the 100 meters and 100 hurdles following preliminary competition.
The meet will resume at noon Saturday, with winners crowned in the remaining 12 events.
MEN'S RECAP
Senior Jordan Taylor was one of three Pioneers to advance to Saturday's finals in the 100 meters, as he won preliminaries with a career-low time of 10.56 seconds. Senior Marquel Pittman was second behind Taylor at 10.59 seconds, while senior Jarvis Barber Jr. took sixth in prelims at 10.71 seconds.
In the 200 meters, junior Dorian Craven finished 10th at 22.25 seconds, and freshman Adrian Gumm was 13th in the hammer throw with a season-best throw of 40.58 meters (133 feet, 1 inch), just shy of the program record of 40.78 meters (133 feet, 9 inches) set by Evan Grooms at the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Championship.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Freshman Kiera Taylor and senior Aliyah Adderley each advanced to the finals of the 100 meters, with Taylor earning the top seed in finals with a time of 12.11 seconds, the fifth-fastest in program history. Adderley was seventh in prelims with a season-best time of 12.36 seconds, while freshman Theresa Green-White was 10th at 12.41 seconds, which moved her into fourth on the program performance list.
Green-White advanced to the finals of the 100 hurdles as she was sixth at 14.74 seconds, a season-best time for her and the second-best in program history behind the 14.69 seconds from Kenisha Stubbs set at last year's Catamount Classic.
Taylor took fourth place in the finals of the 200 meters at 25.04 seconds, the sixth-best time in program history, while in the 1500 meters junior Emily Coddington recorded a career-best time of 4:47.93 and finished in fifth place. Freshman Inmaculada Delgado ran 5:13.50 in the 1500 meters for a season best time that moved her into fifth place on the program performance list.
In the hammer throw, sophomore Amber Hogan just missed her school record as she threw 40.71 meters (133 feet, 6 inches), the third-best mark of her career and just off her record of 40.94 meters (134 feet, 4 inches) set at the Montreat Invitational in 2022.
