CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Tusculum University had three NCAA Division II qualifying performances and set five school records on Saturday's final day of the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University.
The Tusculum men finished sixth overall in the field of 10 teams with 60 points, while the Pioneer women were seventh out of 10 with 24 points across the two-day event.
Tusculum will next compete at the one-day LR Outdoor Open on Saturday, April 23 at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
MEN'S RECAP
Jarvis Barber Jr. qualified second for the finals in the 100 meters with a preliminary time of 10.62 seconds, then ran 10.39 seconds in the finals to finish second overall and qualify for NCAAs. Barber's time in the final was the third-fastest in school history. Devan Hart finished fourth in the finals at 10.60 seconds, ninth-best time in school history, while Marquel Pittman tied for 10th-fastest in program history with his fifth-place finish in 10.61 seconds.
Zackary Nelson was second in the 400 meters at 47.46 seconds, which is an NCAA qualifier and broke the school record of 48.16 seconds set by Jontavus Walker at Montreat in 2021. Stephen Brewer ran 50.04 and finished 10th, with the eighth-fastest time in program history, and Xavion Bogus ran 51.73 seconds to move into seventh on the all-time Tusculum performance list in the event.
In the 800 meters, Antonio Aparicio ran 1:54.26 to finish 10th overall and break his own school record of 1:55.27 he set at last year's Catamount Classic. Kyler Hodges had a career-best time of 1:58.19, as did Carson Walls (2:05.38) and Evan Bruce (2:05.81).
David Saruni finished third in the 400 hurdles at 54.71 seconds, putting him second on the program performance list with the third-fastest time in program history.
Tusculum's relays each set school records on Saturday, with the 4x100 team of Hart, Barber, Pittman and Nelson earning an NCAA qualifying time with a second-place finish in 40.55 seconds. The previous record of 40.56 seconds was set at the 2018 NCAA Division II Championship.
The Pioneers' 4x400-meter relay of Barber, Nelson, Brewer and Pittman was timed in 3:14.36, smashing the old record of 3:20.88 set last week by Brewer, Barber, Nelson and Saruni at the Flames Invitational. Their time was three-tenths of a second short of the NCAA qualifying time in the event. The "B" team of Bogus, Saruni, Aparicio and Joshua Stephens ran 3:24.55 and finished eighth overall, with the third-fastest time in program history.
Stephens competed in the triple jump and finished fifth overall with a best mark of 13.38 meters (43 feet, 10 3/4 inches).
The host Catamounts won the team title with 174 points, followed by UNC Asheville (127.5 points), ETSU (103), Wofford (67) and Gardner-Webb (61.5) in the top five. Tusculum was the top non-Division I school at the meet with 60 points, followed by Milligan (51), Mars Hill (30) and King (25) with Point scoring zero points.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Kenisha Stubbs broke her own school record in the 100 hurdles that she set in Friday's qualifying with a time of 14.69 in the finals, placing her fifth overall. Stubbs ran 1:04.59 in the 400 hurdles and took third place, with the third-fastest time of her career and best of the season.
Silvia Bah was Tusculum's top finisher in the 100 meters with a season-best time of 13.08 seconds, while Judy Chellah took 12th overall in the 400 meters (1:03.21) and Destiny Lottie placed 13th in 1:05.99. Chellah's time moved her up one spot to eighth on the program performance list in the 400.
Emily Coddington just missed breaking her own school record in the 800 meters, placing 10th overall in 2:21.28 to come within three-tenths of her mark of 2:20.97 set last year at the Catamount Classic. Celine McNally was 17th overall in 2:25.76 and moved into third on the Tusculum performance list in the event.
Shanee Angol, who won the javelin and qualified for NCAAs on Friday, finished eighth in the shot put on Saturday with a throw of 11.02 meters (36 feet, 2 inches) which is fourth-best in program history.
In the 4x400 relay, the team of Earthaiza Watkins, Stubbs, Chellah and Lottie ran 4:04.88 for the sixth-best time in school history and a sixth-place finish in the event.
Wofford won the team title by a half-point over ETSU, outpointing the Bucs 176.5 to 176. Western Carolina was third with 134 points, followed by Gardner-Webb (91), UNC Asheville (63) and Milligan in sixth with 26. Tusculum's score of 24 was ahead of King (19) and Mars Hill (12.5) with Point scoreless.
