MONTREAT, N.C. --- Tusculum University finished competition at the Montreat College Invitational on Saturday, setting four men's and one women's school record for a total of six records over the two-day event.
Tusculum's women finished fifth out of 28 teams that scored at the meet, earning 52.5 points to finish behind Western Carolina (118), UNC Asheville (90), Anderson (61) and Catawba (54). The Pioneer men were tied for 14th out of 32 scoring teams with 21 points. Carson-Newman led the men's team standings with 108 points, just ahead of UNC Asheville at 105.
The Pioneers will return to competition at Lee University, participating in the two-day Flames Invitational on April 9-10.
MEN'S RECAP
The Pioneers set four school records in nine events on Saturday, with Jontavus Walker and Antonio Aparicio each setting one individually and one as part of the 4x400-meter relay. The 4x400 of Devan Hart, Kyle Stanley, Walker and Aparicio finished fifth overall in 3:26.44 to break the record of 3:27.75 set in 2019.
Walker placed fifth overall in the 400 meters at 49.65 seconds, surpassing the old record of 51.35 seconds set by J'Quen Johnson in 2018. Johnson also had his 800-meter record of 1:58.56 go down as Aparicio took sixth in the event with a time of 1:56.67.
Althiery Leontes set the school record in the 110 hurdles for the second time in a week, taking third place in 15.10 seconds that improved on his previous mark of 15.34 seconds set Sunday at the LR Bears Open.
Walker finished 10th in the 200 meters at 22.10 seconds, tied for the ninth-best mark in program history and putting him third on the program performance list. A total of four Pioneers climbed on the 200 performance list on Saturday, with Giovanni Purser (22.77) moving into sixth place, Hart (22.89) in eighth and Pierre Dupuy (23.14) in 10th.
In the 800, Kyler Hodges ran 2:00.47 which is seventh-best in school history, while Caleb Archer moved into sixth place on the performance list with his time of 2:04.59. Dupuy tied for eighth on the performance list in the 100 meters at 11.22 seconds, and Hart climbed into 10th place at 11.31 seconds.
Tusculum's 4x100-meter relay of Hart, Gerard Hearst, Dupuy and Purser was fifth in 42.47 seconds.
In field events, Alex Higgins finished 10th in the shot put at 13.28 meters, the fifth-best mark in program history. Zach Lane took 15th in the shot at 12.78 meters, seventh-best in school history, and he added a career-best throw of 34.14 meters in the discus.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Kenisha Stubbs was the lone record setter for the Pioneers on Saturday, running 15.51 seconds to place eighth overall and break her own record of 15.56 seconds set on Sunday at the LR Bears Open.
Faith Bostick finished second in the 100 meters at 12.09 seconds, just off her school record of 12.07 seconds set Sunday at Lenoir-Rhyne. Bostick placed fourth in the 200 meters at 25.22 seconds, the second-best mark in program history.
In the 800 meters, Emily Coddington finished 10th in 2:21.79, placing her second on the program's all-time top 10 list. Earthaiza Watkins finished fourth in the 400 meters at 58.54 seconds, seventh-best in school history, and took 10th in the 200 meters at 25.90 seconds.
Tusculum's 4x400-meter relay team of Stubbs, Watkins, Bostick and Aliyah Adderley finished in third place in 4:02.34, ranking fifth in program history. In the high jump, Destini Wilson tied for third place at 1.56 meters.
