LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's indoor track and field teams began competition Friday at the VMI Winter Classic.
The Pioneers set three school records on the opening day of action, and will return for the meet's second day on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
MEN'S RECAP
Senior Althiery Leontes advanced to the finals in the 60 hurdles and set a school record with a time of 8.45 seconds. Leontes, who was second in prelims, broke the mark of 8.55 seconds set by Jamire Thompson at the 2019 SAC Championship.
Tusculum's distance medley relay of junior Kyler Hodges, grad student Kyle Stanley, sophomore Antonio Aparicio and senior Will Cronin ran 10:28.97 to break the school record of 10:36.45 set at the 2020 SAC Championship by a team that included Hodges and Stanley.
Sophomore Caleb Archer finished ninth in the 5000 meters at 15:41.89, improving his career best by 13 seconds while moving into second place on the school performance list and seventh on the program Top 10 list. Freshman Ray Richardson placed 10th with a season-best time of 16:18.24.
In the long jump, freshman Javell Brown finished fourth with a mark of 6.64 meters (21 feet, 9 1/2 inches), moving him into third on the program performance list with the fifth-best jump in program history. Freshman Javon Brown was seventh in 6.49 meters (21 feet, 3 1/2 inches).
WOMEN'S RECAP
Junior Destini Wilson broke her school record in the long jump for the second straight week, clearing 5.42 meters (17 feet, 9 1/2 inches) to surpass the mark of 5.32 meters (17-5 1/2) set last week at ETSU.
Senior Kenisha Stubbs and junior Brianna Oats each advanced to the finals in the 60 hurdles. Stubbs was fifth in prelims at 9.38 seconds, tied for the second-best time in program history, while Oats was sixth in 9.59 seconds which is a season best and seventh on the program's Top 10 list.
Sophomore Erin Bruce finished 11th in the 5000 meters with a career-best time of 20:23.89. Senior Yoland Boyce became the first Pioneer to race in the 1000 meters and finished seventh overall in 3:27.07.
