WISE, Va. --- Tusculum University held on for a 4-3 victory over UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis Tuesday afternoon at the Humphreys Tennis Center.
The 25th-ranked Pioneers (12-2, 4-1 SAC) led 3-1 midway through singles, but the Cavaliers (4-11, 1-5 SAC) won the next two matches to tie the match. Tusculum would clinch the victory at flight three with a straight-set victory from David Negzaoui.
The Pioneers won the doubles point in a tiebreaker, as Negzaoui and Will Gee defeated Miguel De Rueda and Daniel Gonzalez Garza 7-6 (7-4) at flight three. At flight two, Rens Verhaar and Kai Poelchau teamed for a 6-3 win over Chathurya Nilaweera and Mario Viana de la Torre.
After UVA Wise tied the match with a win at flight four, the Pioneers took a 3-1 lead as Angus Howard beat Dmitrii Semenov 6-2, 6-1 at flight five and Reese McCann beat Gonzalez 6-4, 6-4 at flight six. Wise would come back with a pair of straight-set wins at flights one and two, but Negzaoui beat Viana 6-4, 6-2 at flight three for the victory.
The Pioneers, who have won three straight matches and eight of their last nine overall, will host nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, March 28 beginning at 11 a.m. The Bears are one of three unbeaten teams in conference play at 7-0 following a 4-0 victory over Coker on Tuesday.
