Pioneers take 5-2 win over WVSU in home opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University won the final three singles matches to earn a 5-2 victory over West Virginia State University in non-conference men's tennis Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (7-1) lost the doubles point but came back to earn four of their five singles wins in straight sets against the Yellow Jackets (3-2).

In doubles, Rens Verhaar and Kai Poelchau earned a 6-3 win over Niclas Naedele and Facundo Campana Urcia at flight two, but WVSU won in a tiebreaker at flight three to go up 1-0 in the match.

A 6-2, 6-2 win by Reese McCann over Ben Steinhoefel at flight five evened the match for the Pioneers, and Will Gee took a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory at flight three over Heinrich Lindeque to put Tusculum ahead 2-1. Forkane Lebdi outlasted Verhaar 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 to level the score at 2-2, but Romain Payan put the Pioneers ahead for good with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Roger Santilian at flight two. David Negzaoui clinched the victory as he beat Naedele 6-4, 6-3 at flight four, and Angus Howard was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Wacil El Hanafi at flight six in the final match of the day.

The Pioneers will carry a three-match winning streak into their South Atlantic Conference opener against Anderson on Wednesday, March 4 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The Trojans fell to 2-3 this spring and 0-2 in SAC play with a 4-1 loss at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
