Pioneers to compete at ITA Regional this weekend

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Members of the Tusculum University men's and women's tennis team will be participating in the ITA Southeast Regional beginning Saturday and continuing through Tuesday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.

A total of 96 singles players and 48 doubles teams for both men and women will compete in the event, which brings together the top Division II players throughout the Southeast Region.

Singles play begins with first and second round matches on Saturday, followed by third-round matches on Sunday. The quarterfinals will be played on Monday, with semifinals and finals on Tuesday. In doubles, action gets underway with first-round matches on Saturday, followed by second and third-round contests on Sunday. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be Monday, and the final on Tuesday.

Tusculum has four men's and two women's singles players entered in the field, along with two men's doubles teams.

MEN'S PREVIEW
Sophomore Rens Verhaar will play Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against Daniel Adelino Lopez of Barton in his opening match. Verhaar went 2-1 in singles at last year's tournament. Sophomore Anton Krondell also plays his singles opener at 9:30 Saturday, facing Louca Bertone of Limestone. Krondell also had a 2-1 record at last year's regional.

Senior Nathan Matsuguma begins his singles action on Saturday at 10:30 when he faces Johan Holgersson of Barton. Matsuguma will be making his ITA debut, and is off to a 3-0 start this fall. Junior Will Gee also takes to the court at 10:30 Saturday against Stanley Waters of Converse. Gee was 2-1 last year in his first trip to the regional in his career.

In doubles, Krondell will team up with junior Miles Ray to face the Limestone tandem of Andre Zamorano and Andres Cortes at 8:00 Saturday morning. Ray and Gee went into the round of 32 last year, while Krondell has not played doubles at ITA in his career. Gee and Verhaar will also play Saturday at 8:00 against Tim Stemler and Charlie Fremaux of Belmont Abbey.

WOMEN'S PREVIEW
Junior Ylva Frafjord Landa and sophomore Thilda Danielsson will represent the Pioneer women's team at the ITA regional.

Landa earned a bye into the second round and will play Saturday at 4:00 against the winner of the match between Tina Gomes of Catawba and Sofia Balsera of Flagler. Landa was a quarterfinalist last year, winning four matches to advance to the round of eight. Danielsson, a first-time participant, will face Rosa Amavizca of Limestone in the first round on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
