SALISBURY, N.C. --- Carson Smith's second goal of the game broke a 1-1 tie in the 70th minute as Catawba College went on for a 3-1 victory over Tusculum College Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action at Frock Field.

Spencer Preston added an insurance goal with 1:16 left for the Indians (9-6-1, 2-5 SAC), who outshot the visiting Pioneers (2-10-3, 1-7 SAC) by a 17-8 margin.

The teams played a scoreless first half before the Indians broke the deadlock at 55:44 when Smith took a cross by Valentin Nava and scored his seventh goal of the season.

Almost exactly five minutes later, the Pioneers knotted the score at 1-1 when Drayson Davenport recorded his first goal of the season at 60:45. Smith and Nava combined for the eventual game-winner at 69:06 on a two-on-one break, as Nava fed Smith for his eighth goal of the year.

The Pioneers had two scoring opportunities in the final four minutes, but shots by Andres Jarquin and Dean Hopewell were stopped by Catawba keeper Luke McCarthy. Preston then capped the scoring in the final 90 seconds after taking a pass from Mark Ketterer on a three-on-two break.

Pioneer keeper Andy Goellner finished with four saves in goal, while McCarthy tallied three stops in the match.

Tusculum hosts Montevallo Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. on Pioneer Field in the squad's final non-conference match of the season.
