Anderson shuts out Tusculum in series opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Anderson University's Kaleb Owens and Carson Roberts combined on a three-hit shutout as the Trojans blanked Tusculum University 6-0 Friday night at Eastman Credit Union Field & Pioneer Park.

Anderson (8-3, 1-3 South Atlantic Conference) records its league-leading third shutout of the season, while the Pioneers (4-8, 0-4 SAC) suffer their sixth consecutive loss.

Owens (2-0) allowed a pair of singles and recorded 10 strikeouts in his seven innings on the mound. Roberts fanned three and allowed a base hit in his two innings of relief work.

The Trojans scored five runs in the second inning utilizing six hits. Gray Wells hit a blooper down the left field line for his third double of the season to start the frame. Myles Denton followed with a single to move Wells to third. Wells would trot in with the first run of the inning thanks to Dom Bello's base hit. Adams Faucett drove in the second run of the game with his RBI hit, while Riley Matthews skied a high fly ball to left that was lost in the sun as he legged out the double to drive in the third run of the contest. Braeden Harrison wrapped up the frame with his two-run single as AU led 5-0.

Tusculum starter Owen Canter (0-2) rebounded and blanked the Trojans over the next three innings to keep the Pioneers in striking distance.

The Pioneers had a solid scoring chance in the bottom of the fourth as Steve Scarfone was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a fly out, Evan Goins reached on an error. Goins and Scarfone both moved into scoring position thanks to a balk. But Owens posted back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and would end up retiring the final 11 batters in a row.

Anderson added a run in the seventh as Faucett drew a bases-loaded walk.

Tusculum's Maverick Foster pitched a shutout inning, while Will Webb blanked the Trojans over the final two frames thanks to a pair of strikeouts.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
