GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum baseball player Zach Brunet and softball pitcher Ireland Cavanaugh have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.
Brunet, a senior from Commerce Township, Michigan, batted .625 on Saturday as the Pioneers split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Anderson. The win proved to be important as TU claimed the final spot in this week's SAC Tournament.
Brunet went 5-for-8 on the day with two doubles, a home run and five RBI. He also scored four runs for the Pioneers who finished eighth in the league and clinched a winning record for the Black & Orange.
He established career highs with four hits, two doubles, nine total bases and five RBI in TU's 19-10 win in Saturday's first game. He also belted a three-run homer in the victory. In Saturday's second game he went 1-for-2 against the Trojans.
He is batting .400 this season where he has totaled two home runs, six runs scored and eight RBI.
Ireland, a junior from Columbus, Georgia, pitched 11.2 innings and posted a 0.60 earned run average as the Pioneers went 3-1 to close out the regular season. She recorded seven strikeouts against two walks.
She pitched 4.2 inning against UVA Wise where she allowed one run on four hits in a no-decision as Tusculum won 2-1. She pitched three hitless innings in relief to earn a victory in Tusculum's 4-2 triumph over Newberry. She followed with four shutout innings in a 3-2 loss to the Wolves in the second game. She allowed only one hit and accounted for three strikeouts.
Cavanaugh finished the year with a 10-9 record and a 3.83 ERA with 74 strikeouts.
