ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Two members of the Tusculum women's soccer team were recognized as members of the South Atlantic Conference All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the SAC Championship match on Sunday.
Senior forward Jordan Newby and sophomore midfielder Sonja Ballmert were among the 11 players selected to the All-Tournament team, after helping the Pioneers advance to the semifinal round. Tusculum finished the season 10-7-1 overall and in fourth place in the SAC with a 7-3-0 regular-season conference record.
Newby scored the Pioneers' only goal of regulation and was one of four players to score on penalty kicks as Tusculum advanced past Lenoir-Rhyne in the quarterfinal round. The Pioneers outscored the Bears 4-2 on penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
Ballmert also scored in the penalty kick shootout against Lenoir-Rhyne, and headed in the tying goal in the 16th minute against top-seeded Carson-Newman in the semifinals. The goal was the first in seven games allowed by the Eagles, who went on to a 2-1 overtime win over the Pioneers and then defeated Wingate 4-0 in the championship match.
Both Newby and Ballmert were named honorable mention All-SAC, after Newby led the Pioneers with six goals and Ballmert added five during the season. Ballmert led the Pioneers with 14 points (five goals, four assist) with Newby ranking second with 12 points.
Lauren Wade of Carson-Newman was named SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring five goals in three matches, including a hat trick in the final.
