Pioneers ranked among NCAA stat leaders

The Tusculum College softball team is well-represented in the latest NCAA Division II statistics report, through games of Sunday, March 18.

The Pioneers' Elizabeth Johnson is ranked in the top 40 in four pitching categories, with six teammates also appearing on the national leaderboard. As a team, Tusculum appears among the top 50 in four categories.

Johnson entered the week ranked second in Division II in victories with 18, and subsequently took over the lead Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial by claiming a pair of wins to become the first 20-game winner in Division II this season.

Johnson also began the week tied for 17th in shutouts with four, 30th in earned run average at 1.45 and 39th in strikeouts with 86.

Third baseman Savannah Ewing is second in sacrifice hits per game with an average of 0.55 per contest (18 in 33 games), and left fielder Ashley Burke is tied for eighth in sacrifice flies with three.

Shortstop Lindsey Umberger is tied for 14th in strikeouts per at-bat at .033 (three strikeouts in 92 at-bats). Her ratio of one strikeout every 30.7 at-bats is good for 41st in Division II.

Catcher Paige Sneed is tied for 31st in walks per game at 0.67 (22 in 33 games), while centerfielder Katie Brennan and first baseman Kaytlin Stroinski are among those tied for 42nd place in triples with two.

As a team, the Pioneers are 11th in double plays turned per game at 0.52 (17 in 33 games), and rank 18th in team earned run average at 1.71. Tusculum is 33rd in fielding percentage with a .967 mark, and places 37th in triples per game at 0.27.

The Pioneers are 23-12 overall and 6-0 in the South Atlantic Conference heading into Saturday's SAC doubleheader at Brevard, which begins at 1:00 p.m.
