NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Newberry College women’s soccer team won its fourth straight match with Saturday’s 1-0 win over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference action. NC improves to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the league. Tusculum falls to 5-5-1, 2-2 in the SAC.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening 45 minutes. Tusculum had its best opportunity late in the first period when Newberry keeper Emily Rhoades saved a blast from Pioneer senior Danielle Tanner.
Newberry’s Lauren Carbonell provided all the offense it would need as she kicked in a round shot from Allie Johns in the 59th minute. It was Carbonell’s third goal of the season.
For the remainder of the match, Newberry turned away several charges by Pioneers as Tusculum out shot NC by a 21-11 margin in the contest.
Rhoades recorded her second straight shut out as she posted a career-high 11 saves. TC keeper Vanessa Fyffe accounted for seven saves in the loss.
Tusculum is back in action on Tuesday night as the Pioneers travel over the mountain to face Mars Hill for a 7 p.m. league tilt.
