CARSON-NEWMAN EDGES WOMEN'S SOCCER 2-1October 1, 2008JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Tusculum College women’s soccer team fell to South Atlantic Conference rival Carson-Newman College on Wednesday 2-1. Tusculum falls to 5-4-1 and 2-1 in conference play while the Eagles improve to 7-3 and 2-0 in SAC action.
The Pioneers took the early 1-0 advantage in the match midway through the 11th minute on Kelly Barron’s 10th goal of the season, unassisted. Carson-Newman’s Melissa Morris answered with an unassisted goal of her own in the 42nd minute, finding the back of the net off a free kick to put the Eagles back on terms heading into the half.
Carson-Newman later took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute when Brittany Moore accepted a pass from Morgan Gruenenfelder, and delivered a driven shot into the top right corner for the match-winner.
Barron and Rachelle Luster led the way for the Pioneers with two shots each as the Eagles outshot Tusculum 14-7 in the match. Vanessa Fyffe played the full 90 minutes for the Pioneers, making five saves.
The Pioneers resume their SAC schedule on Saturday when they travel to Newberry, S.C. to take on Newberry College in the first match of a men’s and women’s doubleheader. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Newberry College Soccer Field.
