WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS SAC PLAY WITH 3-0 SHUTOUT OF LINCOLN MEMORIALSeptember 24, 2008GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Senior forward Danielle Tanner scored a pair of goals and junior goalkeeper Vanessa Fyffe recorded her first career shutout to lead the Tusculum College women’s soccer team to a 3-0 win over Lincoln Memorial University to open its South Atlantic Conference schedule. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0 in SAC play, while the Railsplitters suffer their first loss of the season to fall to 4-1-1 overall and 0-1 in league action.
The match remained scoreless into the 21st minute before Tanner found the back of the net for the ninth time this season to give the Pioneers the early 1-0 advantage. After making a run that put her behind the defense by a healthy margin, the 5-7 forward delivered a perfect strike under the keeper’s dive and into the net for her 30th career goal.
Tusculum carried the 1-0 advantage into the second half before scoring twice in the span of 22 seconds, as Tanner and fellow senior Kelly Barron added goals in the 68th and 69th minutes to put the black and orange ahead by a 3-0 margin. Tanner’s goal came off a cross from sophomore forward Ashley Bradford that curled into the box, leaving Tanner in perfect position to volley it into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the campaign. Barron was credited with her seventh of the season in the 69th minute after Tanner’s cross deflected off her foot past the LMU keeper.
Fyffe played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, making three saves en route to her first career clean sheet and her fourth win of the season. Tanner led the way for TC with six shots, including four on frame, finishing the match with two goals and an assist.
The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday when they square off against Brevard College in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
