WOMEN'S SOCCER TO HOST SOUTHERN VIRGINIASeptember 17, 2008GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tusculum College women’s soccer team enters the week with a pair of region matches fresh in its mind after defeating no. 7 Columbus State on Friday night, and playing to a 1-1 draw with Armstrong Atlantic on Sunday afternoon.
Senior forward Danielle Tanner scored two of her season’s five goals last week, bringing the Pioneers back on terms in each match to earn South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Tanner has found the back of the net in each of TC’s last three matches to move into a tie for fourth all-time in the program’s history with 26 career goals. The 5-7 forward currently leads the team in nearly every offensive category, recording a team-high five goals, 11 points, 21 total shots, and 18 shots on goal thus far.
Fellow senior Nicole Ferris is in her fourth season with the black and orange, having started every match since her freshman year. A native of Lebanon, Ohio, Ferris found the back of the net for the first time this season against Columbus State, tallying her first career match-winning goal off a free kick in the closing minutes of the first half to put the Pioneers up 2-0. The 5-10 defender currently leads TC with three assists, and is tied with junior transfer Rachelle Luster for third on the team in points (5).
The Pioneers square off against Southern Virginia University tonight at Pioneer Field in the first match of a men’s and women’s doubleheader. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
