WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYS TO 1-1 DRAW WITH ARMSTRONG ATLANTICSeptember 14, 2008GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tusculum College women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Armstrong Atlantic State University on Sunday afternoon, leveling the match on Danielle Tanner’s fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute. The Pioneers are now 2-3-1 on the season while the Pirates head home with a 2-2-1 mark in the campaign.
The match remained scoreless into the second half, with each side taking six shots in the opening 45 minutes. Armstrong Atlantic scored the first goal of the match in the beginning seconds of the 47th minute when Kristin Burton took possession several yards outside the Pioneer 18-yard box, before driving a brilliant shot just inside the near post for the 1-0 advantage.
Armstrong Atlantic held the narrow advantage into the 58th minute until Tanner delivered a strike under the diving Pirate keeper from 15 yards to put the black and orange back on terms. The two sides battled into the closing seconds of extra time as the Pioneers finished the match with a slight edge in shots (19-18).
Vanessa Fyffe played the full 110 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, allowing one goal and making five saves. Tanner finished the match with four shots, all of which on frame. Senior forward Kelly Barron also had four shots in the match.
Burton finished tied with teammate Brittany Carr with three shots in the match. Tracey Mitchell played the full 110 minutes for the Pirates, allowing one goal and making eight saves.
The Pioneers return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sep. 17 in the first match of a doubleheader with the men’s soccer team, taking on Southern Virginia University at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
