The Tusculum College women’s soccer team were unable to overcome a one goal deficit against Georgia College & State University on the first day of the Cougar Invitational, falling to the Bobcats by a 2-1 score. The win marks the first of the season for Georgia College & State, and drops the Pioneers to 1-2 on the season.
The match remained scoreless until the beginning seconds of the 20th minute when GCSU’s Lyric Burnett took advantage of a deflection in the attacking third and buried it in the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage.
Georgia College & State held the slim 1-0 lead into the early moments of the second half before TC’s Kelly Barron
took possession of a loose ball in the area, and delivered a brilliant strike to bring the Pioneers back on terms at 1-1 in the 50th minute. The Bobcats reclaimed the lead less than four minutes later when Mary Byrne accepted a headed pass from Jamie Nevin, and pushed it past the Pioneer keeper to put the Bobcats back on top at 2-1.
Barron led the way for the black and orange with four shots and her second goal of the season. Danielle Tanner
added an assist on Barron’s goal, her first of the campaign. Vanessa Fyffe
made four saves in the match.
Tusculum returns to the pitch on Sunday morning when it takes on no. 6 Tampa on the final day of the Cougar Invitational. Kick-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the CSU Soccer Complex.
