GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Danielle Tanner recorded a hat-trick to lead the 11th-ranked Tusculum College women’s soccer team to a 9-1 win over visiting Mount Olive College Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The match was the closing contest of the 2008 Tusculum Soccer Classic.
Rachelle Luster accounted for a pair of goals and an assist, while Kelly Barron, Ashley Bradford, Michelle Meade and Patience Leonard also found the scoring column as the Pioneers improve to 1-1.
The Trojans (0-2) scored the first goal of the match in the fourth minute when Aleycia Higgins found the back of the net to take an early 1-0 lead.
Tanner scored her first goal of the day at the 12:25 mark, while Luster followed six minutes later with the eventual match-winner. Tanner added her second scoring tally as she knocked in a loose ball and knocked it past the keeper. She completed the hat-trick in the 26th minute as she took a pass from Luster and chipped the ball over the keeper’s head for a 4-1 advantage, heading into the locker room.
Bradford accounted for her first goal of the year in the 56th minute, which was assisted by Cassy Melnike and Nicole Ferris. Barron added her first scoring tally of 2008 at the 68:56 mark on an assist by Meade.
Luster scored her second goal of the match in the 78th minute, which was assisted by newcomer Holli Cadenhead, Meade and Leonard added tallies in the final 10 minutes of play to wrap up the scoring.
Vanessa Fyffe picked up the win in goal for the Pioneers as she logged 76 minutes while recording three saves. MOC keeper Lyndsey McIntyre accounted for seven saves in her 70 minutes of work.
Tusculum out-shot the Trojans by a 27-6 margin, including 16-1 in the second period.
Tusculum will be in action next Friday (Sep. 5) when they face Georgia College & State University in Columbus, Ga. in the first match of the Columbus State Classic.
