NOVA SOUTHEASTERN SHUTS OUT TUSCULUM WOMEN'S SOCCER IN SEASON OPENERAugust 29, 2008GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tusculum College women’s soccer team opened its season on Friday night at home against Nova Southeastern University, falling to the Sharks 3-0. The Sharks are now 1-0 on the season, while the Pioneers begin the campaign with an 0-1 mark.
Nova opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Alexis Hernandez buried a cross from Shurell Burton in the bottom corner past the diving TC keeper. NSU’s Heather Swift extended the lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute after a brilliant through ball by Burton, sliding it past the diving keeper for her first goal of the season.
Natalie Bellini scored Nova’s third and final goal of the match in the 29th minute off a corner kick, taking possession of a free ball in the area and burying it in the top of the net.
Burton and Swift led the Sharks with three shots each, as Burton led Nova with her first assists of the 2008 campaign. Goalkeeper Sarah Glass played the full 90 minutes for Nova, making four saves to earn her first shutout of the season.
The Pioneers were outshot 12-10 in the match, placing four shots on frame against Nova’s keeper. Danielle Tanner and Kelly Barron led TC with three shots apiece.
Tusculum returns to the pitch on Sunday in the finale of the Tusculum Soccer Classic against Mount Olive. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 pm at Pioneer Field.
