KANSAS CITY, Kan. --- The Tusculum College women’s soccer team is ranked 11th in the nation heading into the 2008 season, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Following a season in which the Pioneers posted a 15-7 record and made an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance, Tusculum is poised to make another run deep into the postseason as it returns eight starters from last season’s team.

Defending NCAA II National Champion University of Tampa leads the pack with perennial division II powerhouses Franklin Pierce, Grand Valley State, Seattle Pacific, and Columbus State rounding out the preseason top five. Also earning spots in the preseason top 10 are University of the Incarcerate Word, West Chester, Minnesota State-Mankato, Saint Rose (N.Y.), and Central Oklahoma.

Several of Tusculum’s 2008 opponents have earned preseason rankings, including South Atlantic Conference rival Carson-Newman at number 22. The Pioneers face a challenging opening few weeks of the season as they will meet top-ranked Tampa in Columbus, Ga. before returning home for a rematch of last year’s regional final against Columbus State the following Friday at Pioneer Field.

Tusculum will open its regular-season on Friday, Aug. 29 against Nova Southeastern in the second match of the Tusculum Classic at Pioneer Field.
