Railsplitters capture SAC contest with header goal
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Michelle Allen scored the game-winning goal with 8:22 left in double overtime as Lincoln Memorial University defeated Tusculum College 2-1 in a South Atlantic Conference women's soccer match Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Allen headed home a corner kick by Nicole McKinney to give the Railsplitters (6-6-2, 2-3-1 SAC) their first win in their last four conference matches. The Pioneers (8-6-1, 3-3-0 SAC), playing their third straight double-overtime game, saw their winless streak stretch to four matches (three losses, one tie).
Tusculum took a 1-0 lead at 14:44 when Tramicka James scored her team-high 12th goal of the season. Amy Neltner crossed a pass from the far left wing toward the goal, and James flicked a header past LMU keeper Kayla Hanson for the first goal of the afternoon.
LMU needed just 1:06 to tie the score at 1-1, as Sarah Taylor netted her sixth goal of the season on a free kick from 20 yards.
From there, the defenses took over as neither team was able to generate any scoring opportunities on an afternoon dominated by 20 mph winds that gusted directly down the field. A scoreless second half was followed by a scoreless first overtime period, but LMU cashed on on the game winning just 1:38 into the second extra period.
The Railsplitters finished with a 15-10 shot advantage over the Pioneers, while Tusculum had a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Both Hanson and Pioneer keeper Marissa Williams finished with five saves in the match.
Tusculum will conclude its regular-season home schedule on Saturday when Catawba visits Pioneer Field for a 2 p.m. match.
