Marissa Williams records third shutout of the season
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Freshman Marissa Williams recorded her third shutout of the season to lead the Tusculum College women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over visiting Brevard College Wednesday at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (5-3, 1-0 SAC) are victorious in their league opener, while the Tornados (2-7, 0-4 SAC) suffer their fourth straight loss.
Williams went the distance between the pipes for TC as she tallied the clean-sheet with four saves.
Senior Michelle Meade got the Pioneers on the scoreboard in the 34th minute when she capitalized on a turnover in the attack third and knocked home her third goal of the season from 10 yards away.
Senior Claire Duncan scored her first goal of the year at the 52:34 mark on a penalty kick as Brevard was whistled for a hard foul in the box prior to a Tusculum corner kick.
Tusculum added its final goal of the match in the 78th minute when senior Patience Leonard tallied her first goal of 2011 when she beat the keeper from 10 yards in front of the goal. Leonard’s goal was assisted by rookie Nikki Arthur and sophomore Jenique Thombs.
Tusculum out-shot Brevard by a 15-6 margin, including 8-3 in the final 45 minutes.
BC keeper Brittany Webster suffered the loss as she went the distance, while recording four saves.
Tusculum continues its four-match home-stand this Saturday when the Pioneers host Newberry College for a 2 p.m. league contest. Brevard is also in action Saturday when they host Mars Hill for a SAC battle at 4 p.m.
