Claire Duncan scores match-winner on penalty kick
COLUMBUS, Ga. --- Tramicka James recorded a pair of goals and Michelle Meade assisted on both as the Tusculum College women’s soccer team tallied three second half goals to rally to a 3-1 victory over the University of Tampa Friday afternoon. The match was part of the Hughston Sports Clinic Shootout, hosted by Columbus State University.
Tusculum (2-3) hands the Spartans (4-1) their first loss of the 2010 campaign.
Tampa dented the scoreboard first in the 14th minute when Samantha Kay scored on an assist by Andrea Arnone.
The score would remain that way until the 61st minute when James gathered in a give-and-go pass from Meade and blasted a one-timer to the far post for the equalizer.
TC went ahead on a penalty kick by Claire Duncan at the 72:59 mark as Tampa was whistled for a foul in the box. For Duncan, it was her first goal of the season and also proved to be the match-winner.
James added an insurance goal in the 86th minute on a breakaway pass from Meade to provide the final margin of victory. For James, it was her first brace of the season and her second and third goals of 2010.
TC keeper Kelsey Cunningham recorded her first win in goal as a Pioneer. Cunningham went the distance as she posted a pair of saves in the nine shots she faced. The Pioneers out-shot the Spartans by a 10-9 margin, including 8-5 in the final 45 minutes.
Tusculum continues its Georgia road-swing on Sunday as the Pioneers will face the University of West Georgia for a 1 p.m. match on the Carrollton campus.
