Tusculum burns nets, Moore makes SAC history in 73-58 win at Newberry

Kyle Moore becomes league leader in career three-pointers

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Kyle Moore scored 25 points while becoming the South Atlantic Conference’s all-time leading three-point shooter in Tusculum College’s 73-58 road win at Newberry College Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena.

Moore connected on five 3-pointers for a third straight game, giving him 246 for his three years at Tusculum, surpassing the 244 posted by Lenoir-Rhyne University’s John Wadsworth from 1992-96.  Moore broke the record with his 245th trey, while also giving him his 1,500th point in a TC uniform.

Moore went 9-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-9 from three-point territory for his 25 points, including 17 in the opening half.

TC’s Jimmy Boone added 13 points, while Justin Steigerwald posted career-highs with 12 points and nine assists in the victory.

Tusculum (9-8, 3-3 SAC) shot a sizzling 62.8 percent from the floor, including 15-of-22 in the first half as the Pioneers led 39-28 at the break, including Steigerwald’s half-court three-pointer at the buzzer to send TC to its biggest lead of the first 20 minutes.  It was also Steigerwald’s first collegiate three-pointer.

Tusculum opened the second half with a 13-1 spurt that included a pair of Moore three-pointers, including the SAC record breaker with 18:47 remaining in the game.  Tommy Klempin capped the capped the 13-1 run with a lay-up as TC led 52-31 with 15:38 left.

Newberry’s Ray Robinson cut the deficit to 15 points with four straight points, including his jumper in the paint with 9:46 remaining, but that was as close as the home team would get.

Tusculum shot 9-of-14 from beyond the arc (64.3%) as a team, while also winning the rebound battled by a 36-24 margin.  The only fault in the Tusculum armor Wednesday night was at the charity stripe as the Pioneers shot an uncharacteristic 10-of-22 (45.5%).

The Tusculum defense limited Newberry to shoot 39.2 percent for the game, including 5-of-21 from three-point territory (23.8).

Robinson led Newberry (6-11, 1-5 SAC) with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Aaron Edwards finished with 10 points for the Scarlet & Gray.

The Pioneers got nine points each by Wes Taylor and Josh Bennett, while Rob Troutman dished out four assists in the victory.

Moore now has scored 1,505 points in his 76-game Tusculum career, which is now eighth all-time in school history, moving pass Paul Minton, who scored 1,500 points from 1969-73.

Tusculum will be at Wingate University this Saturday for a 4 p.m. SAC contest at Cuddy Arena.
