Kyle Moore scored 32 points in Tusculum's 63-49 win over Lake ErieHIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. --- Kyle Moore poured in 32 points, including 22 in the second half to lead the No. 14 Tusculum College men’s basketball team to a 63-49 win over Lake Erie College in the consolation game of the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic. The two-day tournament was held at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University.
Moore (Gainesville, Fla.) shot 11-for-20 from the floor, including 6-of-10 from three-pointer territory. The 2009 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year also dished out four assists and shot 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Junior Rob Troutman added 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds as the Mt. Washington, Ky. native shot 5-of-7 from the field and dished out four assists in the victory. Senior Wes Taylor (Oregon, Ohio) accounted for six markers and a game-high 12 rebounds for Tusculum.
Lake Erie (1-3) was led by Joe Roberts' 16 points and seven rebounds, while Antonio Kidd finished with 12 points and six boards.
The Pioneers (2-1) led wire-to-wire and used a 9-0 run late in the opening half, which was sparked by a four-point play by senior guard Jimmy Boone (Greeneville, Tenn.) at the 4:08 mark as TC led 26-17. Tusculum increased its advantage to a 14-point lead (31-17) with 2:15 left in the half, capped off by Moore’s jumper for two of his 10 first period markers as TC led 31-19 at the break.
Moore scored the final five points of the first half and the first five tallies of the second period as TC led 36-22 with 16:49 remaining in the game. During a span of almost 20 minutes, Moore accounted for 23 of 29 points as TC grabbed its biggest lead of the contest at 53-36 with 6:23 left in the game.
The Pioneers shot 45.1 percent from the floor, including 7-of-14 from three-point territory. The TC defense limited the Storm to 35.7 percent shooting, including 8-of-29 in the opening half. Tusculum won the board battle for a third straight time this season, out-rebounding Lake Erie by a 38-33 margin.
Boone finished with eight points, while Reynoldsburg, Ohio product Tommy Klempin added four points.
Moore was named one of the four Most Outstanding Players of the Classic, while Taylor was the recipient of the tournament’s “Hustle” Award.
The Pioneers return to action next weekend as they compete at the Dick Campbell Classic in Jefferson City, Tenn. Tusculum will face North Georgia this Friday night at 8 p.m. on the campus of Carson-Newman College.
