Box ScoreGREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Courtney Turner (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season, and Marjaana Kaaresvirta (Turka, Finland) notched her second career clean sheet to lead the Tusculum women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
Tusculum (10-3, 3-1 SAC) controlled the run of play for much of the match, outshooting Newberry by a 17-13 margin to record its 13th consecutive 10-win season. Kaaresvirta made eight saves to notch her second shutout of the season for the Pioneers, while Newberry’s Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) stopped five attempts on goal in the match.
Tramicka James (Wilson, N.C.) paced the Pioneer attack with six shots, followed closely by Michelle Meade (Greeneville, Tenn.) with four attempts on goal. Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) and Laura Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) each had three shots to lead Newberry.
The match remained scoreless until midway through the 73rd minute when Turner netted the breakthrough for the Pioneers, making a run into space at the top of the area and delivering a perfect strike inside the far post for her third career match-winner.
Tusculum returns to the pitch on Wednesday when the Pioneers host Mars Hill College to continue their conference schedule. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
