Box ScoreGREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The No. 7 Carson-Newman College women’s soccer team extended its season-opening win streak to 10 matches with a 3-1 victory over Tusculum College on Wednesday night at Pioneer Field. With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in SAC play, while Tusculum falls to 9-3 and 2-1 in conference action.
Carson-Newman outshot the Pioneers 24-14 in the match, putting 14 shots on frame on the night. Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ontario) allowed one goal and made four saves to earn her eighth win of the season for the Eagles, while Marjaana Kaaresvirta (Turka, Finland) stopped a campaign-high 10 attempts on goal for the Pioneers.
Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) led the way for Carson-Newman with a goal and an assist, while Andrea Saevik (Bolandet, Norway) and Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, N.C.) each found the back of the net to pace the Eagle attack. Kayla Durden (Taylor Mill, Ky.) found the back of the net for the sixth time this season for the Pioneers, tying Tramicka James (Wilson, N.C.) for the team lead.
Carson-Newman scored the match’s first goal late in the 21st minute when Howell won the ball inside the Tusculum penalty area, and delivered a driven strike over the keeper and into the far side of the net to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles would extend the advantage to 2-0 early in the 28th minute on Saevik’s fourth goal of the season, a curling strike inside the near post after a brilliant run past several Tusculum defenders.
The Pioneers pulled within a goal in the 35th minute when an Eagle defender’s intended clearing pass ricocheted off Durden, and into the Carson-Newman net from 25 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the interval. Carson-Newman’s Munguia would add a late goal at the beginning of the 69th minute off a Howell corner kick to equal the final margin of 3-1.
Tusculum returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Pioneers host Newberry College at Pioneer Field in a SAC matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
